"The Worst Hard Time" By Timothy Egan, Recommended by Wintersong. In neo paganism we talk a great deal about our connection to the earth. In "The Worst Hard Time" Mr. Egan depicts a time not far in our own country's past in which the relationship between people and the land became adversarial rather than symbiotic. Unlike the famous "Grapes of Wrath", this book tells the story of the people who chose to stay on the Great Plains during the Dustbowl. Interspersed with their personal stories and recollections, Mr. Egan explains the science, politics, and culture of how the Dustbowl came to happen, in a way which is accessible to the average reader. A must read for those of us who spiritual work connects us intimately to the land in its glory and its fury.
"A Kiss of Shadows" by Laurell K Hamilton, recommended by Fire Tashlin. These books are total smut, and a lot of fun besides. That said, the descriptions of the return of diety into the every day lives of us meat brains and the upheaval that can come from that are inspired. And there's tentacle porn, so you can't go all wrong.
"The Dreaming Place" Charles De Lint, recommended by Fire Tashlin. This is a fast read, and a delightful story about a young girl finding that she is part of a greater world of spirits and ancestors and gods and family. De Lint captures the whole wonder of spirit work as we are first staring out, before it all starts to get hard beautifully in this book.
M.C. Beaton’s “Hamish MacBeth” series: recommended by Galina Krasskova. A delightful series of mysteries focusing on Hamish MacBeth, constable of the quaintly fictional Scottish town of Lochdubh, who always seems to solve the worst murders while in the midst of a comic tangle of romantic foibles. These books (there are 25 in the series so far) are a quick and charming read—great for when one needs a break from god or grad. School!
"World War Z", by Max Brooks recommended by Fire. A great look at the world post zombie revolution and the ways that it might affect global politics and culture.
